I've been really scared to try a new salon, especially because the options in Racine are pretty limited. I seriously considered driving to Evanston for a haircut, but I don't know those salons well either. It seems to me that there are few things in life more terrifying than getting one's hair cut. It's like an overwhelming sense of panic sets in the moment the hairdresser takes the scissors in her hands. You sit there and imagine everything that could go wrong. It has taken two weeks of pep talks (given to myself by myself) for me to work up the courage to make an appointment. What's the worst that could happen? It will always grow back...
Mom and I researched the hair places around Racine, and let me tell you, the options are pretty bad. There were a surprising number of places that advertise for men, women, and children and plenty that didn't have websites at all. My mom's rule of thumb in trying a new salon is to choose based on the products they use. I personally think that the interior design is important too - it's all about the experience y'all!
Tangles is a nice little salon on Main Street that is connected to a products shop called Upurea that sells organic beauty products. Both the shop and the salon are very welcoming, and I decided to take the chance and try them (they have Moroccan Oil, how bad could they be?). I called at one this afternoon and booked an appointment for three. My stylist washed my hair before asking about the cut (which I thought was strange), but I think she did a good job for $35. Nothing quite compares to Studio Taylor, but since Raquel abandoned me anyways, I guess this will suffice.
I have the easiest haircut in the world, so it isn't that surprising that she didn't mess it up. I probably wouldn't go there if I had my hair colored or had a more specific haircut. I pass judgment based on the styles of the stylists, and these stylists were not on point. But for something simple like a trim and some long layers, I would definitely recommend Tangles.
P.S. I would seriously consider paying someone to wash my hair for me every day. It is the best feeling in the world. On the other hand, I don't think you could pay me all the money in the world to cut my hair short. The lady next to me was getting a truly heinous cut, and it got me thinking about my limits. I would never even begin to consider short hair for less than $100,000. Think about it: hair grows about six inches per year, so it would take about a year and a half for my hair to grow back to an acceptable length. And then you have to consider all the awkwardness of growing hair out and all the bad hair days. I would need to be very well compensated to bear such humiliation on a daily basis.
P.P.S. I saw Harry Potter today! It was well done (except the very end), and I cried (Harry's mom gets me every time), but now I have nothing to look forward to in life! Will and Kate had better get pregnant soon because I don't think the Kardashian wedding is enough for me.
One of the things that made me happiest about deciding not to stay in Chicago was the knowledge that I wouldn't have to find a new hairdresser until the woman who's been cutting my hair here for 7 years retires.
ReplyDeleteAs a person who's mother only took her to the hair salon that cost $75 a cut, I have to comment on this. I completely understand what you're saying. Since I stopped having my mom cut my hair in the fourth grade, I've been seeing the same guy (Sal - he's Italian and awesome!). Last month I had to save some money to pay for summer school, and decided to go to Hair Cuttery... For $15 they did a good job. But man, I do miss Jesse, who would wash my hair before I saw Sal. I would pay someone every day to wash my hair as well :)
