La Comida Mexicana

Let me preface my opinions about the Mexican restaurants of the fifth-largest city in Wisconsin with a comment about my taste preferences for Mexican food. I'm a bit of a fake. I can tell you all day how much I love Mexican food, but it's a lie. I love guacamole and salsa and chips, but that's pretty much it. I always get excited about Mexican food, and I even think that the descriptions look good, but I am almost always disappointed. The authentic stuff is too authentic. I like my Mexican Americanized.

That being said, I always choose Mexican places over other options because of my love for guacamole. It usually doesn't matter if the food isn't good because I could survive on guac and chips. I've been to three Mexican places in Racine so far. Here they are from worst to best:

Los Mariachis

Maya, Joe, and I had lunch after summer hours last Friday at this place. It's conveniently located on the way home from work, and the reviews on UrbanSpoon were pretty good. Well, I don't know who these reviewers are, but I can tell you that they aren't very good at reviewing things. The place is really kitschy, and the bathroom was pretty creepy. The salsa wasn't that great, and Joe and Maya didn't seem to love their margaritas. My food was decent, but I only ate about half of it. Why waste time on food you don't love, am I right?

On the positive side, my entire meal with tax and tip cost about $7 or $8 ( I didn't have a margarita though), so it wasn't a total waste of time. I just don't understand how anyone makes money in Racine if all the food is so cheap!

$5.75 for lunch. It's like they want to go bankrupt.
Do you see these margarita glasses? The kitsch factor is at an all time high.
I forgot to ask for no beans! What was I thinking?
Real kitschy, am I right?

Casablanca

I had food here a few weeks ago following a lunch at Chipotle, so I wasn't very hungry at all. Even though I was super full from earlier, I still managed to eat most of my meal. The salsa at the table wasn't all that, but my margarita and food were good. The place is pretty kitschy too (the theme is the movie Casablanca) but nice and definitely family-friendly. Plus, my meal was only around $12 or so including a margarita. I'll be visiting again.

Casablanca on Main Street.

Jose's Blue Sombrero

OMG! This is the best Mexican restaurant I have ever been to in my life! I'm completely serious, but remember that I don't like legitimate Mexican food. I've been to fancy Mexican places in downtown Chicago, so I've had what most would call better food. But I disagree. I went for a work lunch yesterday, so I didn't take any pictures, but I will go again and add some, I promise. The salsa and chips were incredible, and my friend in security says that the guacamole is amazing (oh hey sunshine hey!). I got chicken enchiladas with some kind of avocado sauce, and it was one of the best things I have ever eaten. Even outside of the Mexican food category, Jose's is delicious. I want to go every day until I leave Racine.
