Repeat

Yesterday was First Fridays again, so downtown Racine was crowded and all of the stores were open. There were a lot of musicians performing every block or so, and we spotted our first attractive Racine native. He was alone in a sea of leather vests and camouflage pants.

Maya and I hit up Henry & Wanda's for dinner, which we hadn't been to since the last First Friday. I had a delicious burger and Maya had delicious pizza. That is hands down our favorite restaurant in Racine. And Sixth Street is so much cooler than Main.

This morning, we both woke up early, so we went to brunch at The Red Onion Cafe. We each got omelettes and hashbrowns, and I think it only cost around $8 for each of us (and I still have half for breakfast tomorrow). I really like Red Onion - I think the shop is cute and the food tastes great. Maya was a fan too.

I know I rag on Racine a lot, and most of the time I think this town deserves it (it's a very odd little place), but there are a lot of good things about this place too. The view of the water is really nice from our apartment, and the town is pretty nice to walk around. The shops have a random assortment of merchandise but at least there are shops. And there are quite a few good restaurants around here that have good food for relatively low prices.

That being said, everything is closed on Sunday except the wine and flag stores. There is nothing more frustrating to me because Sunday is usually the day that I'm up early and want to pop into stores on my walk around town. It just isn't a clever business strategy to close everything on a Sunday. Dan said one of the stores across from his place is on "summer break" - there is literally a sign in the window saying they'll be closed through most of August. Are they serious?

Anyways, Maya and I stopped into Uncorkt, the local wine store, on our way back from brunch to pick up a gift for my boss since he's hosting me for dinner tomorrow night. I don't know anything at all about wine, so I chose pretty randomly with the help of the sales lady. Hopefully, it doesn't suck.

Maya and I were talking about how lazy this summer has been for both of us. We've definitely done a lot of the things we meant to do (except Madison; I cry over that every day), but a lot of our weekends are spent lounging around accomplishing nothing. Today, for example, was an incredibly lazy day. I've spent a lot of time stumbling upon stuff online because I'm bored, and I napped for a few hours this afternoon. There are a lot of things I could be doing instead, but I'm too lazy to do them. Even shopping. I chose sleep over shopping. Who am I?

I have found a few treasures online today that I thought I should share:

  • I want to meet the person who wrote this because I think we are the same person. Then again, probably everybody in America thinks the same things. Good to know I have so much in common with my fellow human beings.
  • This is absolutely, no doubt about it, my favorite wedding that I have ever seen. It is the only wedding that I would happily take as my own without adding any personal touches. It is the wedding of Henry Winkler's daughter, which is kind of funny to me, but I absolutely adore everything about it. The colors, the mirrors, the groom - all perfection.
  • I started watching Mad Men on Netflix, but I don't think I like it. The outfits are amazing, of course, but the sexism is just too much for me to handle. And there's just so much ennui - get over yourselves. You are not an angsty teen.
  • I am a bit heartbroken that this blog isn't updated anymore. I just go back through the posts pretending I haven't already seen them.
Maya and I made chocolate chip cookies while listening to my iPod this afternoon. She now knows what horrible taste I have in music. It was my Sing Along mix, a collection of all my favorite songs that are best to sing at the top of your lungs. We listened to A-Teens, Travis Tritt, Sister Sledge, and Enrique Iglesias back to back and in that order. I'm an embarrassment.
